1926 - 2015

Harry Joseph Saelens passed away peacefully with his family at his side, on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 while at the Veterans Unit of Parkwood Hospital in London. Harry served in the Canadian infantry from 1944 – 1945 in Petawawa and Camp Borden. He was a founding member and instructor of the Air Cadets Branch 153 in Tillsonburg and retired from the military as Commanding Officer. He served as Past President of the Tillsonburg Legion, Branch 153 and was an active member for many years. He served as District Zone Commander of the Royal Canadian Legion. Harry became an avid Canadian Historian of WW11 events and collected military artifacts from jeeps to canons to trench art. Later, he served Tillsonburg as Chief Building Inspector from 1973–1996. He learned his trade as a building contractor from 1946–1972. Harry enjoyed teaching building construction courses at Fanshawe College for many years. Harry was predeceased by his first wife Irene (Lippens) and leaves behind his wife Betty (McGraw) Saelens. He will be missed by his 3 sons Terry (Susan), Richard (Theresa), Stephen (Cindy), grandchildren Marcie (Marty), Bryan (Laura), Katheryn, Richard, Justin, Connor, Maggie, Colin, Joseph and Jonathan, great-grandchildren Jaden, Treiten, Bryson, Audrey, Evelyn and great great-grandson Brexton. Keeping with Harry’s wishes cremation has taken place and relatives and friends will be received at the Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519)842-5221 on Monday, January 26, 2015 from 7 – 9 p.m. with a Royal Canadian Legion Branch 153 service being held at 6:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until time of the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Steve Stanley officiating. Inurnment will be at the Tillsonburg Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 153 or to the Charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
